Children's Dentistry Q & A

What is children’s dentistry?

Children have different needs at the dentist than adults do. Children’s dentistry, or pediatric dentistry, is an area of dentistry that the American Dental Association recognizes as its own unique specialty. In order to officially practice pediatric dentistry, dentists have to go through an additional two to three years of specialized training after they get their dental degree, at which point the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry issues them a special diploma.

What makes children’s dentistry unique?

In order to make your child’s dental experience as beneficial as possible, pediatric dentists are trained to provide specialty care in a variety of areas, including:

Child psychology

Early traumatic experiences at the dentist’s office can be hard to shake and frequently develop into long-term dental phobias. Pediatric dentists are trained to make your child feel warm and welcomed and are gifted in making the dental office feel more like a dental home.

Dental education

Your pediatric dentist helps your child learn how to properly care for their smile with tools and techniques that are fun and easy for them to understand, including models, computer technology, and child-friendly terminology.

Growth monitoring

When you bring in your child for consistent pediatric appointments, your dentist is able to properly monitor the growth and development of their jaw and teeth and spot with any dental concerns before they have a chance to progress.

When should my child start seeing a dentist?

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, your child should have their first dental visit about six months after they get their first tooth, but no later than their first birthday. This enables Dr. Henne and the team at Cherry Family Dental to begin monitoring your child’s growth and to form a healthy dental relationship.

After their first visit, you should start bringing in your child for checkups twice a year.

What special services do you offer for children?

In addition to keeping your child’s teeth, gums, and oral tissues healthy, Dr. Henne and the team at Cherry Family Dental provide a few other services to optimize your child’s health. They’re a certified provider of HealthyStart™, an appliance that’s proven highly effective in treating sleep-disordered breathing in children and helping children who experience issues with their airways.

The Healthy Start™ System helps to identify symptoms and understand the underlying root cause of airway issues, to create a treatment plan customized for your child. To learn more, visit their website at
